These words say it all. The relationship with a senior pet is profound because they were there for some of our most important life moments. This quote honours the depth of the human-animal bond and reminds us that the true measure of a relationship is in its depth and the mutual joy it brings.

Of course we form a unique bond with our younger dogs, but the depth and strength of our connection usually deepens over time and when they reach their senior years, together we have created a wealth of shared experiences and profound emotions.

This deep connection can be beautifully captured through photography, preserving a pet's unique personality and offering memories long after they are gone.

The lasting value of a senior pet portrait

As our pets start to enter their senior years we often catch ourselves contemplating their lives, realizing that their time may be drawing to a close.

I've been fortunate to share my life with eight incredible dogs, so I know firsthand the depth of their love. Sadly, I don’t have many photos of most of them, and I deeply wish I did. Still, the few photos I do have are truly priceless.

Photos of our senior pets can offer comfort and connection for years to come. Even after they’re gone, these photos allow us to feel close to our pets, keeping the connection alive, holding them close in our hearts even when they’re no longer with us.

Pets are a significant part of our personal and family story. Photos preserve the bond, joy, and love we share with our pets, ensuring their legacy lives on. Over time, they can be passed down to future generations, serving as a heartfelt connection to the pets that meant so much to us. The photos allow our loved ones to appreciate the unconditional love of the pets that shaped our lives, keeping their memory alive for years to come.

What makes senior pet photos different from other portraits

When I photograph puppies or younger dogs, the sessions are full of laughter, energy, and endless fun.

Senior sessions, however, bring a different kind of magic—they’re filled with tender smiles, genuine raw emotion, and the kind of heart-wrenching love that only comes from a lifetime of memories shared. I am particularly aware of the emotions that are stirred during the session.  It’s not unusual to have pet parents shed a tear.

So these sessions require a special approach.   I take time capturing the pet’s calm presence, their gentle expressions, or distinctive features like grey muzzles and softened eyes.

I aim to capture both the pet’s personality as well as the quieter qualities that come with age, creating portraits that reflect the beauty of a life well-lived.

But many senior pets still have a lot of energy and spunk so in many cases I’ll also capture some action shots that are well loved by pet guardians and always bring a smile!

A Senior Dog’s Story

It is always a privilege for me to be the chosen photographer to capture photos of seniors.

Brewer, at age 12, met me for his photo session at Woodbine Beach in Toronto just days weeks before he was due to have heart surgery.  As this type of surgery is not available in Toronto, Brewer and his Dad were going to travel to Illinois for the surgery. That’s what I call dedicated!

What I most loved about Brewer’s session was documenting the tremendous bond he had with his human Dad. And of course his captivating smile!

In spite of his heart condition, Brewer still had the energy to run and gave us a lot of great action shots.  But I know that the ones that will be most treasured are those that show his quiet, enduring wisdom and his special relationship with his Dad.

As I write this I am waiting to hear the results of Brewer’s surgery and pray that he will still have many healthy years ahead of him!
